How to Use Ornamentation to Enhance the Winter Garden

Although winter is usually not a season favored by garden enthusiasts, we are here to remind you that there truly is beauty in every season. As the snow gracefully covers our gardens, ornamentation can provide focal points to enhance the garden through the seasons. Here we share ideas for incorporating statuary and other ornamentation into your garden for year-round interest. Our Estate Elements collection contains hundreds of unique pieces that will certainly add life to your landscape, no matter the season.

An obelisk adds a strong focal point and structure through the seasons.

Statuary

As abundant greenery is limited in the winter, you can add statuary to your garden to provide a focal point in every season. Statuary helps add character and liveliness to gardens even during the coldest and barest of winters, portraying strength and beauty in one. The effect is quite breathtaking right after snowfall - see for yourself in the examples we provide here.

Fountains

Fountains enhance any garden, in any season, thanks to the grand elegance and intricate detail of these dramatic garden ornaments. Even though we winterize water-flowing pieces for the cold season, fountains add a focal point to a barren garden even in the absence of peacefully flowing water. The visual interest is enough to add balance and symmetry to your outdoor space.

Benches

Often situated at key vantage points, a bench in the winter sits patiently waiting to be enjoyed again with the promise of spring. In the meantime, benches help provide structure to our gardens, accompanying snow covered hedges and enhanced by pure coatings of fresh snow to add a layer of beauty only seen during the winter months.

Planters & Urns

Although garden plantings are dormant in the winter months, planters and urns provide an opportunity to steal the show in the winter with their lovely shapes and intricate detailing. Add some loose evergreen and winterberry branches, complete with a red bow wrapped around your urns for instant seasonal curb appeal – and a welcome pop of color among your snow-covered garden.

Birdbaths

As do fountains, bird baths act as a beautiful focal interest in the winter even with the absence of water. Bird baths can easily be transformed into festive landscape elements with the simple addition of garlands and greenery for the holiday season. During the cold months, bird baths can also be used to hold birdseed to attract birds, always a lovely addition to the winter garden!

A decorative raven adds year-round interest and curb appeal, as does a dog statue standing guard.
